Today, Fugees Family has 15+ years of experience serving students and families from nearly 40 different countries across academies in Georgia and Bowling Green. Our staff are nearly as diverse as our students, with 80% identifying as BIPOC. Languages spoken by Fugees staff include: French, Spanish, Hungarian, Nepali, Newari, Hindi, Twi, Bari, Arabic, Mabaan, Amharic, Swahili, Mandarin, Kibeme, Tchiluba, Kirundi, Farsi. Our team of educators are subject-matter experts and thought leaders in a field essentially created by us — refugee-centered education. The Fugees education model consists of five key ingredients that are critical to facilitating successful student development for newcomers: Holistic English acquisition support A trauma-informed approach to learning Celebrating identity and culture The integration of athletics for all — namely soccer, yoga, and martial arts — as an educational tool An emphasis on music and arts education Project Teranga is Fugees’ newest effort to scale our model by partnering with public school districts and charter networks to design and support newcomer programs. In 2022, Fugees opened the first Teranga Academy with Bowling Green Independent School District (Kentucky).
