Marina Dalglish Appeal
www.marinadalglishappeal.orgAs you may know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2003 – this not only affected me but my entire family. It was one of the most difficult and challenging times of our lives. With the help of the wonderful team of doctors, nurses, oncologists and carers I was able to fight this dreadful disease. Without their skill, dedication, encouragement, professionalism, sense of humour, love and support, I could not have come through my cancer journey. Kenny and I were so grateful and impressed for their help, concern and understanding that we vowed that when I was up and running again we would try and repay a little of what they had done for us! We are delighted that The Marina Dalgish Appeal reached its original target of £1.5million and that the Centre for Oncology at Univerity Hospital, Aintree opened on 4th June 2007. New Challenge We have now set ourselves a new and exciting challenge in conjuction with Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology to help build a much needed Radiotherapy Centre this side of the water, bringing the treatment closer to the patients. It has been agreed that a new radiotherapy unit will be built at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool, alongside the chemotherapy unit established by the Marina Dalglish Appeal in order to serve those local needs. The site has been chosen because of its proximity to the Neurological Centre where many patients with brain tumours receive surgery before referral for radiotherapy at Clatterbridge. The unit will cost £16.2m, £11m of which is being found by Clatterbridge and the Marina Dalglish Appeal is committed to try to raise the final £5m. Our aim is to achieve this challenge by 2010.
