LSE United States Centre

The Phelan United States Centre at LSE is a hub for global expertise, analysis and commentary on America. Its mission is to promote policy-relevant and internationally-oriented scholarship to meet the growing demand for fresh analysis and critical debate on the United States. As one of the world’s most important economies and most open societies, the United States is central to addressing many pressing issues of global importance, from systemic risk in international markets and climate change, to health and inequality, to peace and security. The US Centre pioneers an approach to understanding contemporary America that is diverse, multidisciplinary and internationalised, drawing on the 50+ LSE faculty who write, teach and comment about the United States across virtually every department. Premised on the idea that in an increasingly globalised world economy, the international and domestic sides of American political life can no longer be studied in isolation, the US Centre encourages international perspectives on American policy, paying attention to how other advanced, industrialised democracies are responding to the very same challenges and how their responses might shape the context and possibilities for US action. In taking this approach, the US Centre fosters deeper debate about globalisation and the range of possible responses to cope with its effects, helping to inform and impact policymaking in the US and around the world.
