Trees grow outward from the center, each year adding a new ring of wood onto the prior year’s growth. Time is written in the size and patterns of the annual rings. Wood is harvested from forest restoration projects that are designed to conserve old growth forests by removing over abundant understory conifers, which have encroached old growth stands due to decades of fire exclusion.
