I was introduced to his work at a charity event in Stanhope Castle and was immediately struck by a drawing he had made of one of my neighbours Jeff Fearon. This must have been a pre-breakfast encounter Jeff was dishevelled and in his dressing-gown. The drawing however had a strong ring of truth and I could recognise Charlies gift of line and the depth of understanding of his subject. I immediately not only purchased this work but also commissioned a large oil of myself to be set in the bow window of my castle apartment. This was a gamble for us both as Charlie had not worked on this scale. The gamble paid off. The picture was completed over several months with the colours being observed by Charlies despite his partial colour blindness. A daunting task but a masterful result.
