It was organized as a public corporation under the laws of the State of Alaska on September 18, 1974 within the service area of the Arctic Slope Native Association. Since the implementation of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA), it has operated as the Tribally Designated Housing Entity (TDHE) for the Alaska Native villages of Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Lay, and Wainwright. Additionally, TNHA manages “grandfathered” affordable housing units developed under the 1937 Housing Act in the villages of Point Hope and Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow) as well as 112 units of public market-rate rental housing in Utqiaġvik conveyed from the North Slope Borough in 2004. As of 2020, TNHA manages an inventory of approximately 360 total housing units across a region about the size of Michigan.
