TasteWise Kids
www.tastewisekids.orgTasteWise Kids is a Maryland-based nonprofit (501c3) organization dedicated to inspiring kids to explore and experience the world of food and its sources. We empower children of all ages to think about food in new ways, to explore their own sense of taste and to realize that flavorful, nutritious food and good health go together – naturally. As part of this work, students also see first-hand where food comes from and learning about the importance of agriculture and respecting their environment. TasteWise Kids has 3 program areas: Days of Taste Program – Our largest and longest running program, works with 4th graders to introduce to them to the elements of taste and the journey of food from farm to table. Students participate in a multi-day hands-on experience where they explore new flavors, learn how food is grown locally through a visit to a nearby farm, and learn cooking skills directly from a professional chef. Stand-alone workshops – We are in the pilot phase of creating and running stand-alone workshops of 1-2 hrs. We are often asked by schools, summer learning programs, after school programs, Head Start and other nonprofits to provide food and nutrition education and to teach kids and/or adults where their food comes from in a single day/evening (or over a series of specific workshops). Workshop topics include nutrition/taste, where food comes from, careers in food, and environmental stewardship. High School Students – We are excited to be begin working to provide high quality, hands-on learning to high school culinary students. We are partnering with the Restaurant Association of Maryland and its ProStart program to create new programing for current CTE high school students in Baltimore City.
