Generally, for an individual to be approved for disability benefits by the Social Security Administration: • They must currently not be working (or if they are working, they must be earning less than “Substantial Gainful Activity”: an amount determined yearly by the Social Security Administration); • They must have a physical or mental condition (or a combination of physical and mental conditions) that interferes with their ability to perform work; • The medical condition(s) must be severe enough that it has prevented the individual from performing full-time work for at least 12 months, or it is believed the condition(s) will prevent the individual from performing work for at least 12 months in the future; • There must be ongoing medical treatment for the medical condition(s), and the individual must be compliant with their doctors’ orders; and • The individual’s treating physician or psychiatrist must be willing to provide supportive medical opinions on the individual’s behalf.
