In 1989, GEC ALSTHOM Machine Repairs was established to offer a repair service to the users of AC and DC electric motors and components. The company operated as a division of GEC ALSTHOM Electrical Machines, both entities being part of the larger GEC Alsthom South Africa (Pty) Ltd Company. The Company was originally listed in June 1993 by the South African Bureau of Standards as a supplier of assessed capability to SABS ISO 9002 Quality Systems, listing number LS1016. At the time of listing, the company was trading as ELMAC MACHINE REPAIRS within the ELMAC Electrical Machine Manufacturers. On 1 October 1996, the company name reverted back to its original founding name when Siemens SA withdrew from the joint ELMAC venture. In April 1998, GEC ALSTHOM Machine Repairs was transferred out of the GEC ALSTHOM Electrical Machines Group into the newly established GEC ALSTHOM Transport Group. Due to the rapid growth in the traction manufacturing and repair market, GEC ALSTHOM Machine Repairs was divided into the Machine Repairs and Traction business units. In July 1998, GEC ALSTHOM International was floated on the international stock exchange and changed it’s name to ALSTOM. At this time ALSTOM Machine Repairs changed it’s divisional name to ALSTOM TRANSPORT Repair Services to comprehensively cover all repairs and services offered by the Company. In January 2000 ALSTOM Repair Services purchased a commutator manufacturing company formerly known as Coltec CC. This company and its staff were relocated to the ALSTOM Transport Repair Services site and now form a section within the Traction Division On 25 July 2008, the business of Alstom Repair Services was transferred as a going concern to Acton Repair Services (Pty) Ltd.
