Berkeley Science & Math Initiative
bsmi.berkeley.eduThe Berkeley Science and Math Initiative is UC Berkeley’s response to the crisis in K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in California and across the United States. BSMI consists of Cal Teach, which prepares undergraduates for K-12 math and science classrooms, and Math for America Berkeley, a professional development fellowship program for veteran Bay Area public school teachers. Cal Teach is a program for undergraduate science, math, and engineering majors interested in exploring a career in education. Through our courses students learn conceptual teaching skills and practice these methods in local K-12 classrooms. Cal Teach offers the minor in Science and Math Education, as well as a unique opportunity for students to complete both a degree and a California teaching credential as an undergraduate. The Math for America Berkeley Master Teacher Fellowship is a five-year program that provides teachers with resources and support to excel in today’s urban classrooms. The Fellowship focuses on both professional and leadership development and encourages and encourages fellows to pursue their individual educational interests within the broader framework of the five-year sequence.
