“I was abused for years and spent my life behind closed doors in utter fear. My husband threatened to lock me in prison and place my children in foster homes if I went to the police. He said the visible scars on myself would be treated as self-harm and my children’s injuries would be perceived as physical abuse from me. I felt like a caged bird under his grip.” These words were spoken by a domestic violence survivor who was rehabilitated. The fear of severe consequences and no means to safely communicate can lead to victims feeling trapped and prolong the stay in an abusive relationship.
