The Yukon Film Society is an umbrella not-for-profit organization for year-round media arts presentation, creation, dissemination and professional development based in Whitehorse, Yukon. YFS has a significant impact on the Territory’s cultural scene and serves Yukon media artists and audiences, as well as audiences from the Alaskan panhandle and Northern BC. YFS offers programming and services that advance the skills and experience of media artists at all levels, including those in smaller communities in the region and under-served, diverse communities. YFS was established in September 1984 with an original mandate to promote appreciation and exhibition of films with artistic, social and political importance. In 1995 YFS began facilitating film and media art creation as a personal, cultural and artistic practice. The shift to becoming an artist-driven organization occurred when media artists joined the board of directors in 2000 and media artist Andrew Connors, now YFS’ Artistic Director, became part-time staff. Camera, sound and post-production video equipment acquisition began in 2003.
