Carbon Reduction Commitment Legislation to force organisations to reduce their energy consumption is being introduced across Europe. The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme started on 1 April 2010 in the United Kingdom. Under this legislation organisations must reduce their energy consumption by around 5% each year. Allowances must be purchased for all energy used. Strict penalties and fines will be imposed on organisations who fail to comply. Data centres will face particular challenges complying with this legislation.
