Mechanical Engineering is one of eight academic departments in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Global industry partners and U.S. government agencies (like the Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation) entrust Badger mechanical engineers to design and conduct complex research into a wide range of theoretical and practical questions. Our faculty and student lab teams create a deeply collaborative research environment to study problems ranging from renewable energy to soft robotics and osteoarthritis to vehicle traction on the Moon. Departmental research focus areas include: - Biomechanics - Computation and data-driven engineering - Energy systems - Advanced manufacturing - Mechanics - Robotics, controls & sensing Our Vision - To address critical engineering challenges through world-class basic and applied research, and to excel in undergraduate and graduate education. Our Mission - To create, apply, and transfer engineering knowledge and educate future mechanical engineering leaders for the betterment of society as a whole.
