Institute for Palestine Studies

The Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS), established in 1963, is an independent nonprofit research institution devoted to the study of Palestine and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Its publications, meticulously researched and sourced, are widely respected and extensively cited. There is hardly a serious work on the Palestine question whose references do not include IPS’s publications. Headquartered in Beirut, the Institute has branch offices in Washington, D.C., and Ramallah (West Bank). The Board of Trustees is comprised of leading Palestinian and Arab figures from North America and across the Middle East. As the first unaffiliated Arab institute ever founded, it has served as a model of independence in the region. The IPS central library in Beirut is the largest library in the Arab world specializing in Palestinian affairs, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Zionism and Judaica. Its archives contain rare books; private papers; newspaper collections in Arabic, Hebrew and English; and an extensive photographic collection. IPS was also the first Arab institution to promote the study of modern Hebrew. IPS notably trained a core group of Arab Hebraists who have gone on to develop the IPS library’s large Hebrew collection as well as IPS publications based on Hebrew sources.
