The sculpture was was unveiled in 1993. The memorial has an increasingly significant function for the LGBTIQ community in The Hague and the Netherlands; as a sign of visibility within society, as a connecting symbol and as a beacon for vigilance against oppression. Yearly the are meetings and demonstrations at the site of the memorial, where leaders of the sexual- and gender diverse community speak out, and leading politicians, cabinet ministers and diplomats, express their solidarity and support. The foundation behind the realization of the memorial and activities that take place at the site, was founded in 1987 by the LHBTIQ community of The Hague.
