One of the most important organs in the body is the heart. It serves many functions and along with the brain, is critical in keeping us alive. In order to better understand the heart and all its functions, we look to cardiology experts to help us keep our heart and all its surrounding components healthy. Cardiology is an area of expertise under the umbrella of internal medicine. Cardiologists, who are physicians who specialize in the field, are educated in disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Additional members of the cardiology field include cardiac surgeons who perform cardiac surgery–operative procedures on the heart and great vessels.
