The World Health Organization recognizes more than 350 forms of Primary Immunodeficiency (an umbrella term for inherited defects in the immune system with varying severity and symptoms). It is something individuals are born with. It is genetically based and can affect anyone from any culture at any time. There is often no history of PI in family members. On average, 1 in every 1200 individuals are affected by this disease and early diagnosis and treatment are vital in saving lives. Some disorders, such as Selective IgA Deficiency, can be quite common, occurring in 1 in 300. Others such as Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID) occur in 1 in 50,000 - 70,000. Approximately 29,000 Canadians suffer from Primary Immunodeficiency. Over 70% are undiagnosed.
