He graduated and took an appointment in the U.S. Army Medical Corp for six years where he did his residency in Occupational and Preventive Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He left the Army as a commended Major. After his residency, he earned his Master’s of Public Health (MPH) from Harvard University. He published several research articles in peer-review medical journals. He went into private practice in 1988 and has worked extensively in Occupational Medicine in California, Georgia, Florida, and Texas since that time. He was named a Fellow of the American Board of Occupational and Preventive Medicine. He was appointed as an Agreed Medical Examiner (AME) by worker’s compensation judges in two California counties. He has written on the topic of disability and impairment extensively and published a successful textbook on Worker’s Compensation evaluations “How to Write a Winning Worker’s Compensation Report” from Boston medical publisher OEM Press. He is certified by FIG® in Medical Cost Analysis. He has provided expert medical opinion and testimony on hundreds of cases related to causation, medical necessity, and future medical care. He has written hundreds of Life Care Plans and Medical Cost Projections for personal injury cases over the years. He currently practices in St. Petersburg, Florida, along with his brother, Dr. Kevin Smith.
