Charity No Panic
www.nopanic.org.ukA non-profit charity supporting those who live with panic, phobias, OCD and other anxiety related disorders. The charity was started in 1991 by an agoraphobic who had to give up work due to his increasing anxiety. Not being able to find the much needed support and guidance he searched for, he decided to create a local group for others in the same position by advertising in a local paper. The replies came in thick and fast, and sufferers kept telling other sufferers. Soon the charity was created and operating on a nation-wide basis. Their first starting point was the provision of a helpline operating all day, every day. Quite rapidly the charity became well established and recognised, and from the first year of the helpline when it took 250 calls, it now takes more than 75,000 per year. The initial four volunteers has grown to 90 and the charity now has a membership of over 1500. No Panic now offers a full range of services including telephone and email recovery programs, which are of special benefit to people who live in isolated rural areas or abroad where access to local face-to-face self-help groups or statutory support is very limited. The charity is still run by people who have experience of anxiety disorders of some form or another. We are also backed by some amazing patrons and our president is Emeritus Professor Kevin Gournay from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at Kings College in London.
