The history of the institute began in 1933, when by the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR, the Kiev Aviation Institute was created on the basis of the aviation department of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. Later the name changed: Kiev Institute of Civil Air Fleet (1947), Kiev Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers (1965), Kiev International University of Civil Aviation (1994) and in 2000 National Aviation University.
