Archangel Ancient Tree Archive
www.ancienttreearchive.orgThe mission of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive is three-fold: To propagate the world’s most important old growth trees before they are gone; to archive the genetics of ancient trees in living libraries around the world for the future; and to reforest the Earth with the offspring of these trees to provide the myriad of beneficial ecosystem services essential for all life forms to thrive. Archangel´s origins date from 1996, when David Michael Milarch and sons founded the Champion Tree Project. A Michigan nonprofit, whose vision was to protect the “Old Forest Giants” that we had left, since at that time in the U.S. alone, 98% of all old growth forests had been cut down. With renewed funding, in 2008 the organization evolved into Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. While the concept was the same, the mission was refined. Thus, Archangel ‘Re-Championed’ the big tree project the Milarchs had started a decade earlier. Since then, the group has propagated over 45 out of 100 of the world´s most important tree species on its master list -which comprises trees from every bio-region of the globe. For almost two decades now, first the Champion Tree Project and then its successor Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, have done what the experts said was impossible. Namely, they have taken DNA from over 70 of the most magnificent trees on the planet; have cloned thousands of individuals from this original DNA and are actively re-planting/re-foresting these champion trees all over the world.
