The School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen offers a range of exciting degrees and research opportunities and is recognised internationally for its expertise in zoology, marine biology, plant and soil science, physiology, ecology and conservation. Our degrees are cutting edge and forward looking, enhanced by significant contributions from professional scientists at leading research institutes and consultancies. Nature is on our doorstep - Aberdeen provides you with unrivalled access to fantastic natural habitats including stunning coastline, moorland, mountains, freshwaters and forests for both fieldwork and recreation. The School of Biological Sciences also has its own field stations in key locations across Scotland where students can gain valuable practical experience, crucial for developing the best environmental scientists. Research within the School addresses the fundamental biological consequences of environmental change. Activity is organised through four key research clusters – ecology, environment, evolution and ecophysiology – and incorporates theoretical, empirical and experimental studies on plants, animals and microbes, spanning from gene to global scales, from the deep ocean to high altitude, and from the Arctic to Antarctic. We offer outstanding opportunities for PhD training in a wide variety of biological research areas including fully funded studentships through our QUADRAT Doctoral Training Partnership. We are also a partner in the NERC SUPER-DTP and the BBSRC-DTP EastBio. We have initiatives with Marine Scotland Science (MarCRF) and co-lead a Centre for Doctoral Training in Decommissioning.
