Mission Remission
www.mission-remission.comThe end of cancer treatment can often feel as difficult as the original diagnosis: only 10% of people are positive and ready to move on when treatment is over. You’re faced with the need to return to ‘normal’ life, when life no longer feels normal. Survivors might be struggling with anxiety, in fear the cancer will return, or they might be learning to accept a new disability. Perhaps they’re lost in the health system, or lost in life’s tracks. Psychological and physical recovery from cancer can be a slow process, doubly so in the absence of a national NHS service to address and support the struggles that cancer survivors face. More widely, there’s sparse information on life after cancer. When survivorship is addressed, it is amongst advice on palliative care and prognosis rates. Conscious that you’re struggling with recovery while others face a terminal diagnosis, this isolates you further, so survivors’ guilt might stop you contacting cancer support groups. So we wanted to do something about it. Mission Remission is a people powered platform for cancer survivors to share experiences and practical tips for life after cancer. Through peer support and direct access to research & support services, we aim to make cancer survival less isolating and more empowering, focusing on the positive message that you can feel better after cancer. The platform is not only be a much-needed hub for all things post-cancer, but it also offers the therapy and space for people to voice their experiences, sharing with others that understand. And as advice comes from cancer survivors themselves, it reinforces the message that people can regain control of their lives after treatment. What’s more, the site is a conduit to offer cancer survivors meaningful recovery programs. We are already working with Headspace to offer free access to their mindfulness app – but we are now looking beyond this to exercise programs, and regional support groups.
