In 1974, the USC Keck School of Medicine established the USC Department of Ophthalmology, which grew into the USC Roski Eye Institute, becoming an essential regional, national and global leader in the field. RESTORING USC Roski Eye Institute integrates and applies emerging technologies to develop new methods to restore sight to the blind. Major breakthroughs • Changing health care policy in America -our world-renowned community health studies assess eye diseases for to treatment and prevention initiatives • Pioneered use of ultra-high speed Fournier domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) for advanced diagnosis • Invention of the world’s first FDA approved artificial retina, Argus II- brought an unprecedented degree of sight back to those with a form of retinal blindness • Discovery of a new stem cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration • Discovered which retinal cells mutate to become retinoblastoma-the most common type of eye cancer in children
