A fresh face and approach to the environmental movement, Save the Mermaids is an environmental education non-profit that works with youth to complete ocean research projects and takes students out to sea for hands-on learning adventures. The Mermaids act as ambassadors to the sea by educating their local and online communities about single-use plastic pollution through events, film, creative media, content sharing, blogging, and educational campaigns. The Mermaids are engaged in local and state-wide politics, advocating for change that benefits the marine environment. The Mermaids were instrumental in passing the single-use plastic bag ban in Santa Barbara on October 1, 2013.
