WHALE Arts
www.whalearts.co.ukWHALE Arts is the cultural anchor organisation for the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh. We are a community-led arts charity and social enterprise, set up by local people in 1992. Our mission is to be the creative heart of a vibrant, thriving community. WHALE Arts works with professional artists and makers, children, young people and adults using creativity to teach new skills and empower the local community enabling them to move on to positive destinations. We are based in the purpose built WHALE Centre a unique community asset that provides a range of high quality creative spaces and community facilities. WHALE Arts provides a programme of free or low cost events and activities for children, young people and adults ranging from weekly making sessions, street arts outreach sessions in playparks, and creative workshops with young mums, their babies and toddlers, to a community cinema and the running of a local news website for Wester Hailes; The Digital Sentinel. Within the WHALE we have charities and social enterprises who rent offices - currently we have SCOREScotland, Dad's Rock, The Broomhouse Centre and Business 5's. The spaces in the building are available to rent, these include event space including an multi-use arts workshop, a performance space, a creche / playgroup space, office space, a co-working space with computers, a dark room and a recording studio. At the rear of WHALE we have a lovely community garden, eco-build, and along with our partners SCORE Scotland we run a Friday community meal open to anyone.
