Originally, scriveners were scribes or the writers of documents, and therefore came to be lawyers: the core profession of the company now is that of the scrivener notary, although the membership of around 220 includes people from various other professions as well. The Scriveners Company is based on HQS Wellington, moored at Temple Stairs on Victoria Embankment.
