LCU Fund for Womens Education
www.lcufund.orgThe mission of the LCU Fund for Women’s Education is to clear the path for low-income women to complete college by helping them pay their rent. We award grants to selected colleges or universities within the five boroughs of New York City. Funds are to be used specifically for housing support for women scholars preparing for careers that serve the community. These include the arts, education, social work, public administration, religious leadership, criminal justice, and health care. Since 2001, the LCU Fund has distributed over $16M to nearly 3,000 students across 32 institutions. On average, 150 students are funded annually with an allocation of $6,400 per scholar. On average, an LCU Fund grant covers 47% of a student’s housing costs for the year. The LCU Fund has also leveraged nearly $1M in additional support through matching grants. Alleviating the worry about the cost of housing enables scholars to focus on degree completion. Among LCU Fund alumnae, 89% had graduated from the degree program they were pursuing while they received LCU Fund support.
