en.tabriz.irThe Municipality of Tabriz is the first municipal institution (municipality) in the history of Iran, which was established at the top era of the constitutional movement in Tabriz and is one of the civil & urban results of this movement. Tabriz City Association was also formed in 1286. During this period, no municipality or city association had been established in any of the cities of Iran. Qasem Khan Vali was the first mayor of Tabriz and currently Dr. Yaghoub Houshyar is in charge of this position. Tabriz, the King's residence, which was considered the largest city of Iran and the capital of Azerbaijan during the Qajar period, had a larger population and area in this period comparing to Tehran and was considered the most important and modern city of the country. This King's residence included 10 neighborhoods of Amiraghiz, Charmnar, Charandab, Davachi, Sorkhab, Gajil, Leylava, Myarmiar, Nobar and Varji and water reservoirs, bridges, cemeteries, baths, schools, mosques, squares and their related glaciers. After the establishment of the State Association in Azerbaijan, several government offices and organizations were established in Tabriz, one of the most important of which was Municipality(Baladiyeh). The purpose of establishing the municipality was to protect the interests of the city, address the demands of citizens, manage the city's assets and capital, prevent famine in the city, and to build and equip city thoroughfares. Qasim Khan Vali, the mayor of Tabriz, after receiving the bylaws to establish the municipality, drafted the relevant laws and approved them by the state council. The Municipality of Tabriz also published a local newspaper during this period.
