American producers have a pivotal role to play in tackling climate change, but they shouldn’t sacrifice their own livelihood in the process. Rural Investment to Protect Our Environment (RIPE) is a producer-led organization advancing RIPE100 — a conservation program that would pay farmers and ranchers $100 per acre or animal unit for stewardship practices for the first year, followed by payments above implementation costs, economic losses during transition to new practices, and future climate policy costs combined. Producers would earn payments for conservation practices that deliver public value through carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas reduction, improved soil health, water quality and other environmental services.
