China Books & Periodicals was founded by Henry H. Noyes in Chicago in 1960 as a distributor of books, magazines and newspapers from the People's Republic of China. As interest in China grew in the West, so did China’s Books’ physical presence. Noyes expanded the business to San Francisco, where it flourished as a retail store at 2929 24th Street in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District. A third China Books branch was also established at 125 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Today as part of Sinomedia International Group, China Books remains the oldest and largest publisher, importer and distributor of books from and about China to North America.
