Although small and enclosed, northern Macedonia builds on its complex past to make excellent wines from varieties such as the red Vranec and Stanušina, and the white Žilavka, Temjanika and Smederevka. Some legends say that these varieties were nearby when Alexander the Great supplied his soldiers with grapes grown in what is now the Tikveš district and when the Romans also traded wines here.
