Sarah Jennifer Knott Foundation
www.sjkfoundation.orgCancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) affects on average 600 patients in Ireland per year (NCRI 2016). It is the 4th most common cause of cancer death in the world. Sarah Jennifer Knott Foundation is one of two CUP charities in the world. Currently there is no CUP specialist oncologist or nurse specialist in Ireland. This can lead to treatment delays, uncertainty and poorly coordinated care for CUP patients. Other site specific cancers, affecting smaller patient numbers, have specialist treatment teams in Ireland. Evidence has shown the tremendous benefits resulting from coordinated cancer care. WHAT IS CUP? CUP is when a secondary cancer is diagnosed, but the source of the primary cancer cannot be determined. The secondary cancer is named according to the primary cancer. For example, a cancer that starts in the lungs and spreads to the liver is still a lung cancer. The secondary cancer in the liver is made up of lung cancer cells and not liver cancer cells. Secondary cancers are also usually treated according to the primary cancer. Knowing where the cancer started helps the doctors to know what types of treatment to use for the secondary cancer. For example, a lung cancer that has spread to the liver will be treated using lung cancer treatments. It’s treated differently to a cancer that starts in the liver (primary liver cancer). Patients diagnosed with CUP need expert coordinated multidisciplinary support, effective communication is vital between teams, patients and their families regarding treatment plans and tests. Sarah Jennifer Knott Foundation (SJKF) is seeking to: 1. Promote awareness, education and research of CUP. 2. Provide support and advocacy for patients and families going through the uncertain diagnosis of CUP. 3. Promote improved diagnosis and treatment of CUP. Registered Charity Number: 20157838 CHY number: 22289 Company Registration Number: 600887 Company Type: Company Limited by Guarantee
