POOPS (Pets of Older Persons WA, Inc)

www.poopswa.org.au

POOPS is all about keeping people with their pets, and is as much about human wellbeing as it is about animal welfare. POOPS is an incorporated non-profit association staffed entirely by volunteers that provides free pet care assistance for people over 65 or living with a disability. Pets are vital to many elderly and disabled people. They provide loyal companionship, give their owners a purpose in life, enable them to remain in their own homes for longer and are particularly important for the socially isolated. However, age, medical emergency and disability can prevent many owners from being able to fully care for their pets and this is where POOPS can help. Our volunteers are police-cleared and provide a range of services including dog walking and transport to/from vet clinics, groomer or boarding kennels. POOPS has over 600 volunteers helping more than 250 clients. In 2018/19 POOPS volunteers did over 11,000 hours of voluntary work and travelled over 57,000 kms to assist community members and their pets. POOPS patron is Lisa Baker MLA. Lisa has represented the people of Maylands electorate as a Member of the WA Parliament for over a decade, and is the Deputy Speaker, Spokesperson for Animal Welfare and former CEO of the Western Australian Council of the Social Service (WACOSS). She is a leading voice in Parliament and a champion for improving animal welfare. POOPS previous Patron was Dr Penny Flett, CEO of Brightwater Homes. A former national finalist for Australian of the Year, and holder of Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her distinguished service to aged care and geriatric medicine, particularly in Western Australia. With volunteers spread from North of Perth down to Busselton, our service is intended to help WA’s older people and those who struggle with pet care because of illness or disability.
