The Cape Nordic Corporation, a Danish-South African initiative, is in the process of developing a large-scale, land-based Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS), utilising 4th Generation RAS technology, for the production of salt-water finfish, including Sea Trout (Salmon Trutta) and Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar). The fish farm will be located on the West Coast of South Africa and the first stage of the project, which is planned to be operational within 2020, will produce approximately 1,800 tons/annum live weight Sea Trout or Atlantic Salmon at a maximum live fish size of 5.2 kg. The addition of future stages 2 and 3 will allow the farm to ultimately produce up to 5,400 ton/annum finfish. The 4th Generation RAS technology offers the most environmentally acceptable and efficient solution for the farming of fish. The technology utilises less than 1% of the total RAS fish tank standing volume per hour, which is an important consideration in a water scarce area such as the West Coast of South Africa. Cape Nordic aims to offer a sustainable, high quality and healthy product to both the local and international markets.
