African Innovation Week (AIW) is a global movement aiming to energize innovation and entrepreneurship that brings tangible and inclusive development in the African continent. Empowering the youth and initiating innovative technologies are at the heart of AIW. Once a year, AIW brings together global stakeholders from public, private, startup ecosystems and academia in Addis Ababa. Through out the year AIW arranges different events in AIW scope, provides follow to innovators and connect innovators to investors. The first AIW annual gathering was held from Oct 28 to Nov. 2, 2019 at African Union Commission Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference was accompanied by various parallel events including startup exhibitions, pitching, investor-innovator networking events, a textile & leather products fashion show and other cultural events through out the week. AIW 2019 was organized by IBA Ethiopia Center for Innovation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Innovation & Technology of Ethiopia, the African Union Commission and the Foreign Ministry of Norway via the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ethiopia. AIW 2020 will be organized from Nov 9 to Nov 13, digitally across the globe. The vision of AIW is to create a global platform that gathers innovative African startups to come together and share their experiences with Norwegian and international entrepreneurs, get connected with potential investors, executive bodies, game-changers to work together for a sustainable, mutual and inclusive development. African Innovation Week primarily aims to contribute to six of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development goals: Goal 1: No Poverty. Goal 4: Quality Education. Goal 5: Gender Equality. Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
