When NSDI (Nile Sisters Development Initiative) was founded in 2001 by Ms. Elizabeth Lou in City Heights, our mission was simple: support African refugees and immigrants to become self-sufficient. Ms. Lou came to the U.S. as a refugee from South Sudan. Drawing from her background and profession as a community organizer and health educator, she established NSDI as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to assist fellow refugees. Today, NSDI is a state-wide community-based organization with a satellite program in Orange County and offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento. Over time our mission has expanded to provide: • Culturally and linguistically proficient services to diverse individuals and families from impoverished and marginalized backgrounds. • Employment facilitation, family advocacy and education, and emergency relief services. For over 20 years, NSDI has championed collective impact strategies and is a trusted community organization because of its extensive background and proven expertise.overcome barriers to social and economic self-reliance. Our Purpose Centered in the City of San Diego, NSDI provides many vital programs that directly benefit marginalized communities.
