The Giant Houseparty

Nestled among the skyscraper pines of East Mississippi there is a colorful community of brightly painted cabins lining the dirt roads of a seemingly abandoned hamlet. For 51 weeks a year, this town is virtually uninhabited, but for one special week in July – when the humidity feels like a wet towel on your face – it comes alive like no place on Earth. For over 130 years the Neshoba County Fair has been called many names, perhaps the most famous being “Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty,” but to the locals it’s simply “The Fair.” According to the Sip Magazine, “[f]ounded in 1889, The Fair has been an epicenter of some of the most notable moments in state political, cultural and agricultural history, despite its beginnings as a campground fair. At its core, it remains just that — a community of families who love spending time with each other so much that they shuck most everyday comforts for a week in multi-story cabins, with tens of people sharing one bathroom, sleeping in bunk beds and fighting to be near window air conditioners.” Arguably the most distinctive aspect of The Fair is the politics. The Neshoba County Fair is where national politics becomes local. While no one can prove it definitively, Mississippians assure the rest of America that the stump speech was invented at The Fair. Over 40 years ago, Ronald Reagan launched his 1980 Presidential campaign here in the heart of Mississippi. His message of lower taxes, less regulation, and states’ rights continues to resonate with the Trump voters of today. Our story features the generations of families, the politicians, and the horsemen as they jockey the politics and the party of The Fair.
