The Maltings is at the heart of culture and creativity in Berwick-upon-Tweed - allowing our audiences access to the theatre, cinema, live performance, dance, art exhibitions, talks, festivals, venue and meeting spaces and a busy cafe bar. Seen as one of the region’s key cultural and strategic assets by Arts Council England and Northumberland County Council, our three distinct sites (the main theatre building at Eastern Lane, the Gymnasium Gallery at Berwick’s historic Barracks, and the Granary Gallery within Berwick YHA) allow our impact to be felt across the town and providing a rich and varied offering for the community and visitors. Over the last 30 years over 1000 artists and companies have worked with us with over 1 million tickets sold. The year-round programme includes over 600 events, screenings, and workshops. Our visual arts programme is a major regional resource for visual arts development and learning, supports emerging artists and has an international reach for its artist residencies. As an organisation with social objectives, we have a strong partnership programme with artists, local organisations, schools and community groups to create and hold events and also have a well-established outreach programme.
