Laurel Hill is America's first National Historic Landmark Cemetery, boasting art, architecture, nature and stunning river views. Laurel Hill West, founded in 1869 in Bala Cynwyd, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Both grounds serve as the eternal resting place for numerous historic notables and are open daily with free admission for self-guided tours and recreation. Joggers, dog walkers, bicyclists and photographers are welcome. The sites’ mission of educational interpretation and public access are supported by the Friends of Laurel Hill, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The abundant and progressive programming that the Friends offer throughout the year has established the sister cemeteries as trailblazers in a movement to return cemeteries to their original purpose as sites equally for the living and the dead. All program proceeds benefit the preservation and restoration of historic Laurel Hill.
