While the ease this on-demand lifestyle is appealing, the cost of expediency is weighing on our local economy. Yet, every day we log-in to like, share, comment, click and purchase. Consumers frequent national retailers and Amazon because of one reason; convenience. A handful of non-Cincinnati companies have taken control of the transactions of good and services. Many don’t know that while a small fee is on the consumer’s receipt, the business is charged 20-30%…taking away nearly all of the profits. Dependence on these public companies with resources to scale and dominate result in money outflows from Cincinnati to the economic hubs of Wall Street and Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the global supply-chain continues to pressure our natural resources. Thankfully, we can leverage the technology that made these bemouths what they are to shift reliance from the few to the local. We create the technology and distribution -The cost to develop is the necessary technology is in terms of thousands rather than millions. We can produce locally – 3D printers and vertical gardens are only a couple examples of the movement to local production of goods. Reducing the distance from production to consumption minimizes the carbon footprint. Small scale production and local distribution provides an infrastructure with decentralized ownership, economic freedom and prosperity.
