Christian Democratic International Center

www.kicsweden.org

KIC was formed in 2005 and took over after the "Christian Democrats' Advice for Democracy and Development". The members of the organisation consist of the Christian Democrats (KD) and their associated unions; these mediate the party-related support that KIC seeks through Sida. In addition, KIC channels other initiatives, contributes to the debate on democracy and development, and has a broad network of democracy fighters around the world. The office is located in Stockholm and operations are conducted in Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America. We work closely with several other political foundations both in Sweden and internationally. KIC leads the "Program for Young Politicians in Africa" (PYPA) – the largest program in party-affiliated development assistance in Sweden. PYPA is a cross-party, regional leadership program for young politicians from 16 different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. For help in implementing the program, KIC has three Swedish partners: the Center Party International Foundation, Olof Palme International Center, Green Forum, and three local partners. The aim of the program is to increase young people's participation and influence in politics and their work for democracy. The participants are trained in gender equality, human rights and sustainable development, but also in election campaigns, rhetorics and leadership. In order for the results to be maintained over time, continuous contact with the participants is required. KIC therefore organises special alumni activities. PYPA also recognises the importance of the participants' primary parties and also organises activities with these. According to the participants themselves, the program has a great impact on their capacity as politicians, builds their confidence to act within their parties, and also helps to increase the recognition they receive within the parties. This means that many of the participants get higher positions or special assignments after completing the program.
