Growing up my dad travelled a lot for work. Sometimes for months at a time. For the first year of my life I never actually saw him, as I was in India with my mother and he was in Calgary for work. So when they all went back to Montreal, I didn’t even recognize him, in fact I was scared of him. Throughout my childhood till about the age of 14, my dad was not around a lot. He missed many milestones in my life such as my first step and first words. It wasn’t till we moved to Calgary when I was 14 that his travel days started slowing down. I remember crying every time he would have to leave and being sad for weeks on end. I know that he wished he could have been around more to watch me grow. But as the sole breadwinner at that time, he didn’t feel he had a choice. Now that I have two boys of my own, I know how important having their dad home with them is, because I remember how hard it was not having mine around due to work.
