Prince Edward Island Ground Search and Rescue is a volunteer-based, non-profit, charitable organization based in Charlottetown and serving the entire province of Prince Edward Island. Managed by a volunteer executive, PEI GSAR keeps a roster of nearly 100 volunteer members. The mandate of PEI GSAR is to search for and rescue individuals who are lost or injured. To fulfil this mandate, PEI GSAR volunteers train multiple times a year to practice and maintain skills in navigation, survival, first aid, search techniques, search management, clue identification, tracking and more. On call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, PEI GSAR members respond at all hours of the day and night and in all seasons. Searches range from short responses to those that last for several days. PEI GSAR members work closely with the RCMP, local police services, firefighters, the Canadian Coast Guard, Parks Canada, the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and many others. PEI GSAR is also the responding agency for Project Lifesaver PEI (projectlifesaverpei.com) and runs AdventureSmart (adventuresmart.ca) programs across the island.
