He is Me Institute, Inc.
www.heisme.orgFounded in 2018, the mission of He is Me Institute is to empower Black men to obtain and retain careers in education. We do this by collaborating across the education ecosystem to provide Black males with the experiences and support necessary for them to discover and excel in teaching. To increase the number of Black male educators, education institutions must rethink how they recruit, retain, and retire Black men. Specifically, Black males must: 1. Experience Black male educators during their K-12 career, 2. Be exposed to the teaching profession by serving as mentors or tutors, 3. Explore their own identities to learn how they can impact students, 4. Expand their technical and adaptive skills before and during their teaching career. Our Education Equity Initiative convenes educational entities and provides them with the tools, skills, and resources to facilitate the "4E's" with Black males from K-career. Education Equity Initiative partners can participate by: 1. Identifying a Black male at their institution to host a Black male college student who will teach the social-emotional learning-based I AM KING curriculum for boys of color in grades K-8. 2. Identifying a Black male to teach the high school Education Exploration course. 3. Identifying a Black male to teaching the undergraduate Reclaiming our Identities course. 4. Enrolling Black males in the SEL Seminar Series. Participants who complete a course/seminar series and who engages in I AM KING for one year are enrolled into our Teach Local Fellowship. In addition to our Fellows, the Teach Local Network includes teacher preparation programs, K-12 job recruiters, professional development organizations, and consulting opportunities.
