HelpGuide.org International is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization based in Santa Monica, California. It is dedicated to providing information about mental health and wellness. The site features a series of articles that impart advice on topics such as sleep, exercise, healthy eating and communication skills. It also serves as a resource for those struggling with personality disorders, depression, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder and other lifestyle challenges. Husband and wife team Robert and Jeanne Segal started HelpGuide in 1999 in memoriam of their daughter Morgan, who committed suicide in 1996. Jeanne Segal (1939-2017) earned a Master’s degree in psychology and a Ph.D. in sociology. She is also an author whose books were translated into 13 languages. Robert Segal earned a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and is an active board member for numerous nonprofit organizations in Santa Monica. The Segals started Helpguide with the aim of providing the resources they believe could have helped their daughter. For six years, Morgan Segal struggled with a condition that started as low self-esteem and worsened into major depression. She was prescribed a variety of anti-depressant medications, which only further deteriorated her mental health. In desperation, she attempted suicide twice, succeeding the second time at the age of 29. The Segals believed that easy access to well-written information, which provided other, more holistic, treatment options, could have prevented her tragedy. HelpGuide started out as a joint project between The Rotary Club of Santa Monica and the Center for Healthy Aging. It has since grown into an international community with visitors from over 140 countries. In 2012, the organization partnered with Harvard Health Publishing to include some of its research and articles.
