FEDERAL CRIMINAL POLICE - FINANCIAL DIVISION
www.polfed.beThe Belgian police are structured on two levels: the federal and the local level. These two levels are autonomous and come under the authority of different departments. Together, the Local Police and Federal Police perform the integrated police function. They complement one another and work in close cooperation in order to contribute to security in Belgium and to maintain democracy. At federal level, the specialised police function is performed exclusively by the Federal Police, who carry out specialised judicial and administrative police missions. They also carry out “supralocal” missions and provide support to the Local Police. The Federal Police are composed of operational services (judicial police, traffic police, railway police, air support unit, dog support unit, cavalry, etc.) as well as of administrative services (material means, human resources, etc.). As far as judicial police missions are concerned, the Federal Police deal among other things with priority forms of crime falling within serious organised crime, such as crime against persons (trafficking in human beings, drug trafficking…), crime against goods (thefts, carjackings and homejackings), economic and financial crime (money laundering). The administrative police missions carried out by the Federal Police are the following: traffic policing on motorways, waterway policing, railway policing, air policing, controls at the external Schengen borders, etc. They also accomplish protection missions such as escorting the transport of valuables and protecting royal palaces. The Federal Police also provide support to the administrative authorities and the local police services. They do so, for example, by lending them staff and special material (helicopters, dogs, etc.) to help them maintain public order. The Federal Police are made up of a “General Commissioner’s Office” and of three general directorates, which employ about 13,000 staff members.
