It is a Government-aided college affiliated to the University of Madras. The New College was founded in 1951. The college started functioning on 7 July 1951 with about 200 students in PUC class. The college secured Autonomous status with effect from 2007-2008 and is recently re-accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade. In two shifts the College currently offers 27 Undergraduate, 14 Postgraduate, 7 M.Phil and 11 Ph.D. programmes. The present student strength of the college is about 6000.
