Founded by Johanna Featherstone in 2003, Red Room Poetry (RR) has grown to be Australia’s key organisation for the creation and commissioning of new poetry by established and emerging poets as well as students. Reflecting the diversity of Australian voices, RR embraces all styles of poetry (page, performance, hip-hop, rap, visual) promoting the form across a range of languages and mediums including radio, stage, installation, digital publishing initiatives and learning programs. This has seen RR poets collaborating with truck drivers, Indigenous communities, musicians, inmates, botanists, translating poetry into over 15 languages and developing Australia's first interactive poetry mapping app featuring over 200 commissioned poems. Mission We create poetic projects and learning programs in collaboration with a spectrum of poets, schools, communities and partners for positive social impact. Our mission is to make poetry accessible to all, especially those who face the greatest barriers to creative opportunities. Advocacy Red Room Poetry advocates for professional payment of poets (based on Australian Society of Authors rates) ensuring sustainability, quality creation and the future of Australian literature. Red Room Poetry is overseen by a Board of Directors chaired by Bret Walker SC. John B Fairfax A.O. has served as Patron to Red Room Poetry since 2007.
